Norwegian Bride Traditions

When you are getting married in Scandinavia, it’s important to pay attention to some of the edgier cultures. We asked ceremony organizer Mariella Gink to provide us the lowdown on some of Sweden’s unique norms

Before marriages in Viking days, the bride did consider a bath to cleanse herself and symbolically scrub aside her innocence. Then she would leap into cool waters to symbolize the transition into femininity. Her hair was also a big deal. She would weave it into complex tresses to reflect her masculinity, and the more complex her locks were, the better it boded for the partners. The grooms would use a tunic and trousers made of wool or cloth. They may furthermore carry their weapons.

In Norse society, it was common for people to send each of their guests home with products. This is a convention that carries on today. It is common to see a gift registry at Swedish celebrations, but it’s not the standard to get large economic achievements, as most people can afford to get themselves a manifest.

After the service, it’s time to celebrate! Swedish ceremonies are known for their lengthy, expound breakfast factions. The midnight may contain from eight to 12 remarks, checks of movies from the bachelor and bachelorette parties, games and songs. A friend of the couple is usually designated master of ceremonies to coordinate all the entertainment.

Another quirky Scandinavian wedding tradition is that whenever the groom or bride leaves a room for any reason, other men will line up to kiss them. This is one of our favorite things to capture on camera as a photographer because it’s so funny!
